Services

Five ways I can help. One person doing the work.

Whether you run an association, a charity, a foundation or a community nonprofit, the work starts the same way: with someone who has built, bought, run and retired this kind of technology, sitting on your side of the table. I don’t hand you off to a junior team, and if a vendor I point you to would ever pay me a referral fee, I’ll tell you in writing before you decide. The person who briefs your board is the person on the implementation calls.

Technology Strategy & Advisory

Every organization has technology questions nobody quite owns. Where should the next dollar go? What can we retire? Which vendor can we trust? I help leadership teams answer those, and put the answer in plain language your board can act on.

What I do

  • Technology strategy & multi-year roadmaps
  • Fractional CIO and CTO leadership
  • Vendor strategy, RFPs, and contract negotiation
  • Technology due diligence for mergers, affiliations and acquisitions
  • Operating-model design and tech org structure
  • Board and executive briefings

How it works

Project-based

A six- to twelve-week strategy or roadmap project with a clear deliverable and a fixed price, so nobody is watching the clock.

Fractional retainer

An experienced CIO or CTO in your corner for a few months or longer. More on that below.

Sub-product · Fractional CIO/CTO

A seasoned technology leader, as often as you actually need one.

For organizations that need CIO or CTO judgment in the room but can’t justify, or can’t find, a full-time hire. It suits most associations and nonprofits well, and mid-sized companies in the $5M–$200M range too.

  • Board and executive briefings authored and delivered with the CEO
  • Email me any tech question between sessions. No clock-watching.

Enterprise Systems Modernization

The core systems your organization runs on, whether that’s an AMS, a donor CRM, an ERP or something held together with spreadsheets. Replaced or extended without breaking what already works, with someone on your side who has implemented these systems, not just written requirements for them.

What I do

  • AMS, donor CRM, ERP, CRM, WMS and OMS implementation oversight
  • System selection and vendor evaluation
  • Multi-entity consolidation
  • Legacy system retirement and data migration
  • Integration architecture (EDI, APIs, middleware)
  • Field service and operations technology

How it works

System selection

Eight to twelve weeks: requirements, vendor evaluation, demos that answer your questions instead of the vendor’s, and a recommendation with the total cost of ownership (TCO) that you can defend to your board.

Implementation oversight

Buyer-side governance for SI-led implementations: I sit on your side and hold the systems integrator to scope, timeline and quality, so you’re not refereeing it alone.

Modernization roadmap

Not ready to replace anything yet? That’s fine. A step-by-step plan buys you time and lowers the risk.

Plan a modernization, ERP, CRM, AMS, WMS, OMS, or the data layer they share
03

Data & Analytics Platforms

Member, donor and program data that people actually trust, sized to your organization rather than the vendor’s pricing tier. I help strip the stack back to what you really use, so leadership, and your funders, can believe the numbers again.

What I do

  • Data warehouse and lakehouse architecture
  • Analytics engineering (dbt, real-time pipelines)
  • BI and dashboards (Power BI, Fabric, Tableau)
  • Data governance, quality, and observability
  • Membership, fundraising and marketing analytics, including attribution
  • Data maturity assessment and roadmaps

How it works

Maturity assessment

A three- to four-week check-up against the ARYS data maturity framework, with a step-by-step roadmap and a price next to every recommendation.

Platform build

End-to-end design and delivery of the warehouse, pipelines and reporting layer. I bring in delivery partners only where it saves you money.

Embedded data leadership

Available as part of a fractional CIO/CTO retainer for organizations without a dedicated head of data.

Build our data platform, or run a data maturity assessment first
04

AI & Intelligent Automation

AI won’t replace your team, but it can take a lot of busywork off their plates. I help you find where it’s genuinely useful, where it isn’t, and what data needs to be in place first. I’ve built AI systems that run in production, so the advice comes from doing, not from demos.

What I do

  • AI readiness assessment and roadmap
  • LLM and agent deployment (member and donor service, content, operations)
  • Applied ML (forecasting, recommendations, classification)
  • AI governance and risk frameworks
  • Operational automation (intake, document processing, routing)
  • Vendor evaluation for AI products and platforms

How it works

AI readiness assessment

Four weeks to find the three to five AI uses worth your time, what data each one needs, and the order to tackle them in.

Deployment partnership

From pilot to production for the ideas that pass the readiness check, built on tools your team can keep running after I leave.

AI governance

Policies, guardrails and board-ready language for when your board, members or donors are asking questions faster than you can answer them.

Build our AI roadmap, start with readiness, not a pilot

Program Leadership & Transformation

Big multi-vendor, multi-year programs, run by someone who has delivered them. If a project is bigger than anything your team has done before, or it’s stalled and everyone’s a little tired of it, I step into the seat and help get it moving again.

What I do

  • Program and portfolio leadership
  • Multi-vendor governance and accountability
  • Change management and staff enablement
  • Stalled-program rescue and re-baselining
  • IT integration after a merger or affiliation
  • PMO design and operating cadence

How it works

Program leadership

I lead one named program from the inside: usually a multi-vendor implementation, a large initiative, or a transformation that’s already underway.

Program rescue

Two to four weeks on a stalled program: find out what’s really wrong, get decisions moving again, and reset the plan with the team you already have. No blame, just a way forward.

Portfolio oversight

When several projects are running at once, a light layer of oversight that spots trouble before it turns into a board conversation.

Lead a program, including stalled ones already in flight

Not sure where to start? That’s normal. Start with an assessment.

The Stack Assessment takes 21 days at a flat, published price, from $9,500. Or start smaller with a $4,500 Tech Stack Check-up, credited in full if you go on to the assessment. It shows where the money is going, what’s actually broken, and what should come next, even if the answer is "not much".

Ways to work together

A question, or a conversation

Send me a question and I’ll answer it. No scope, no proposal, no obligation. Plenty get settled in one reply, and if the honest answer is that you don’t need to hire anyone, I’ll tell you. Everything below is for when one email really isn’t enough.

Typical: one email, or a 30-minute call →
01

Project-based

Defined scope, fixed timeline, named deliverables. Strategy work, assessments, system selections, and bounded implementations.

Typical: 4–16 weeks
02

Fractional retainer

Ongoing CIO or CTO leadership at a sub-full-time commitment. Standing cadence, advisory hours, board visibility.

Typical: 3 months minimum
03

Workshop & training

Board briefings, leadership workshops and hands-on staff training on data and AI, built to make new technology feel less daunting, not more.

Typical: 1–3 days

How I handle vendors. When a decision involves vendors, I’ll give you more than one option, tell you which I’d choose and why, and tell you in writing if any of them would pay me a referral fee. You make the call. I never suggest a vendor I don’t believe in. On paid assessments, any referral fee is credited back to you.

Bring me the question that keeps coming back.

Everything on this page started as someone’s real problem. Tell me yours. The first conversation is free, honest and short.
